Yobe Troops Detain Man for Alleged Theft of Government Seed Planting Machines

In a recent operation, troops stationed at the Forward Operations Base (FOB) in Yobe arrested a 43-year-old man found in possession of 19 seed-planting machines. These machines were part of a distribution program initiated by the Yobe State government to assist local farmers under its Agriculture Empowerment Programme.
The arrest occurred early Tuesday morning, at approximately 12:10 AM, according to a statement from retired Brig.-Gen. Dahiru Abdulsalam. Abdulsalam, who serves as the Special Adviser to Governor Mai Mala Buni on Security Matters, explained that the suspect was apprehended while traveling on the Potiskum to Gombe Road. The equipment was concealed within a blue 18-seater bus, which was registered under the number KTG 449 YG.

The seed-planting machines were intended to help farmers improve their productivity and were distributed for free by the state government as part of its efforts to boost agriculture in the region. However, it appears that the suspect had illegally obtained these items. Abdulsalam highlighted that the man was unable to provide any documentation or proof indicating that he was a legitimate beneficiary of the government’s programme.
The suspect, identified as a resident of Jigawa State, claimed that he had purchased the seed planters from an individual named Alhaji Babaji, who is reportedly based in Damaturu. According to the suspect, each machine was bought for N50,000. He admitted that he was transporting the equipment with the intention of reselling it in Dutse, Jigawa State.

The involvement of the state government in the distribution of these seed planters underscores its commitment to supporting local agriculture and improving food security. The Agriculture Empowerment Programme is designed to enhance the capabilities of farmers by providing them with modern equipment and resources. The misuse or theft of these resources not only undermines the programme’s objectives but also affects the farmers who genuinely need these tools to improve their agricultural practices.

Following the arrest, Abdulsalam confirmed that the suspect, along with the recovered seed planters, would be handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for further investigation and legal action. The NSCDC will be responsible for prosecuting the individual, ensuring that appropriate measures are taken to address the illegal activities.
Governor Mai Mala Buni had previously issued a directive to security agents to be vigilant and to apprehend anyone attempting to illegally remove or traffic these agricultural tools out of the state. This measure reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to protect and effectively utilize resources intended for the betterment of the agricultural sector and the welfare of local farmers.
The situation highlights the importance of vigilance and oversight in the distribution of aid and resources. Ensuring that such equipment reaches its intended recipients is crucial for the success of government initiatives aimed at supporting agriculture and enhancing the livelihoods of those involved in farming.
