Members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have vehemently opposed a purported initiative to engage in negotiations with the bandits within the state.
This stance was articulated in a statement released by the House Chief Press Secretary, Bello Kurya Madora.
As per the statement, the lawmakers expressed their belief that advocating for a peace treaty and reconciliation with the bandits would not offer a viable solution to the prevailing issue in any manner. The lawmakers bemoaned, “Those advocating for a peace treaty and reconciliation with bandits are solely driven by political and self-serving motives.” This development ensued following a Notice of Public Importance (NPI) presented by the Majority Whip and representative of Anka, Honourable Rilwanu Marafa Nagambo.
Nagambo additionally revealed that reports reaching them suggested that certain unpatriotic individuals were traversing the state, particularly the regions most affected by the ongoing security challenges, engaging in negotiations with bandits under the guise of a peace treaty aimed at fulfilling their political objectives. The Majority Whip consequently urged the House members to promptly alert both the state and federal governments, as well as relevant security agencies, to take decisive action against this group of individuals engaging in negotiations with bandits in the state.
In their contributions during the session, the lawmakers decried such behavior, denouncing it as an act of subversion against Governor Dauda Lawal’s endeavors to combat the insecurity plaguing the state.
They affirmed their unwavering support for the State Governor’s efforts to reject any discussions with bandits whose malicious actions have hindered lawful livelihoods within the state. The lawmakers revealed that these individuals were also claiming to have been authorized by the federal government to undertake negotiations with the bandits.
Following extensive deliberations, the Speaker, Rt Honourable Bi’yaminu Ismail Moriki, declared that the House had unanimously agreed to censure the purported schemes of certain unpatriotic individuals seeking to undermine the Zamfara State government’s efforts to address insecurity.
He announced that the House had resolved to alert both the state and federal governments, as well as security agencies, to promptly take action against these unpatriotic politicians.
