Ebonyi’s New Universities Set to Open in Early 2025, Says Commissioner

Prof. Amari Omaka, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education in Ebonyi State, has announced that the two newly established universities in the state are expected to begin their academic sessions early next year. This development marks a significant milestone for higher education in the region.

Omaka made this announcement shortly after the swearing-in ceremony of the acting vice chancellors for the University of Information Communication Technology, Oferekpe-Agbaja, and the University of Aeronautical Engineering, Ezza. The ceremony was held at the New Government House in Centenary City, Abakaliki, and was attended by various dignitaries and stakeholders.

The commissioner acknowledged that while the initial plan was to have the universities operational by September, this timeline might not be realistic due to ongoing construction and the development of master plans for the universities.

Omaka explained that several critical preparations are still underway, including the completion of academic buildings and the establishment of necessary infrastructure. Despite these delays, he assured that everything is being done to ensure that the universities are ready to admit students by early next year.

Omaka also emphasized the significant responsibilities that come with the new roles of the acting vice-chancellors. Prof. Ernest Egba has been appointed as the acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Information Communication Technology, and Prof. Patrick Nwofe will lead the University of Aeronautical Engineering.

The commissioner highlighted that their roles extend beyond mere academic leadership; they are expected to drive the universities forward and work closely with the National Universities Commission (NUC) to secure the required approvals for a smooth start.

In his address, Prof. Ernest Egba expressed his enthusiasm for his new role and his commitment to advancing the university’s mission. He promised to do his best to ensure the university’s success and expressed confidence in his ability to overcome challenges with the support of his team.

Prof. Patrick Nwofe also pledged to fulfill his responsibilities in line with the state’s educational goals. He assured that his efforts would contribute to making both the state and the university proud, aiming to establish the institution as a world-class center of learning.

Both acting vice-chancellors are determined to lead their respective institutions to success and contribute positively to the educational landscape of Ebonyi State.
