On August 23, 2024, President Bola Tinubu officially swore in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). This significant appointment also marks her as the second woman to hold this prestigious position in the country’s history. Justice Kekere-Ekun assumes her new role in an acting capacity, pending the Senate’s confirmation of her appointment.

Justice Kekere-Ekun’s appointment follows the retirement of her predecessor, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who stepped down on August 22, 2024, at the age of 70. Justice Ariwoola’s retirement ended a notable judicial career that spanned several decades, during which he played a key role in the Nigerian judiciary.

The ceremony, held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, was attended by high-ranking officials and members of the judiciary. In his address, President Tinubu praised Justice Kekere-Ekun for her extensive experience and her contributions to the judiciary. He emphasized that her appointment reflects a commitment to upholding the integrity and independence of the Nigerian legal system.

Justice Kekere-Ekun, who has been serving as a Justice of the Supreme Court, brings a wealth of experience to the role. She has a distinguished career in law, having worked on numerous high-profile cases and earning respect for her judiciousness and commitment to justice. Her elevation to the acting Chief Justice role is seen as a step towards ensuring continued stability and fairness in the Nigerian judicial system.

As the new acting Chief Justice, Justice Kekere-Ekun will oversee the judiciary’s operations and ensure the proper administration of justice throughout the country. Her role will include guiding the Supreme Court, addressing legal and constitutional matters, and ensuring that judicial processes are carried out impartially.

The Senate’s confirmation process will involve a thorough review of her qualifications and suitability for the position. This process is crucial as it ensures that the appointment is in line with the principles of transparency and accountability. If confirmed, Justice Kekere-Ekun will officially assume the role of Chief Justice, where she will have the opportunity to shape the future of Nigeria’s judiciary.

Justice Kekere-Ekun’s appointment is a historic moment for Nigeria, reflecting progress in gender representation within the highest levels of the judiciary. It is anticipated that her tenure will bring a renewed focus on legal reforms and the pursuit of justice. As the nation awaits the Senate’s confirmation, the legal community and the public will be watching closely to see how Justice Kekere-Ekun will influence the direction of Nigerian jurisprudence.

The swearing-in of Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as acting Chief Justice marks a new chapter in Nigeria’s judicial history, promising a period of continued diligence and integrity in the administration of justice.
