‘People are suffering’– Yoruba Council of Elders urges Tinubu to address hardship

The Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE) has expressed serious concerns about the growing socio-economic difficulties in Nigeria and has called on President Bola Tinubu to take immediate action to alleviate the hardships many Nigerians are facing.

In a statement released on Thursday, Oladipo Oyewole, the General Secretary of the YCE, underscored the urgent need for the government to address the widespread challenges that are impacting everyday life. Oyewole highlighted that there is a pressing need for government intervention to ease the growing struggles of the populace.

“The YCE remains hopeful for a positive turnaround in Nigeria’s current situation,” Oyewole stated. “However, given the limited information available about the government’s activities and initiatives, there is a considerable level of suffering among the people. This suffering is becoming increasingly evident, and urgent measures are required to address it.”

The statement pointed to several critical issues contributing to the hardships experienced by Nigerians. Among these are the persistent lack of reliable electricity and the recent hike in fuel prices. Oyewole noted that these problems have compounded the difficulties faced by ordinary citizens, making daily life increasingly challenging.

“The lack of consistent electricity and the recent increase in fuel costs have severely impacted the quality of life for many Nigerians,” Oyewole said. “These issues have led to higher living costs and have made it even harder for people to manage their day-to-day needs.”

Oyewole stressed that the Federal Government must explore all available options to ensure that the benefits of democracy reach the citizens effectively. He emphasized that this should not be through superficial or temporary measures but through implementing substantial and effective governance strategies that improve overall living conditions.

“The President needs to urgently reassess and refine his strategies to address the immediate needs of Nigerians,” Oyewole suggested. “While working towards long-term improvements, it is crucial to focus on short-term actions that can provide immediate relief.”

The YCE’s statement also called for a comprehensive approach to boosting the welfare of Nigerians, urging the government to ensure that all citizens can enjoy a better quality of life. The statement criticized the current state of governance, describing it as a “bitter pill” for the nation, and urged President Tinubu’s administration to act swiftly to mitigate the suffering experienced by the people.

The YCE is advocating for prompt and effective action to address Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges and improve the daily lives of its citizens. The council believes that with the right approach, the government can help alleviate the current hardships and set the stage for long-term progress.
