Military Should Be Exempted From Incurring Charges For Airport Access -Keyamo

The House of Representatives has urged the Ministry of Aviation to exempt members of the Armed Forces from tollgate fees and parking charges at airports throughout Nigeria. The Federal Executive Council (FEC) recently decided to eliminate the special treatment previously given to VIPs, including the president and vice president, resulting in significant revenue losses for the government.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, stated that all individuals, including VIPs, are now required to pay access or toll fees before entering the airport. However, in response to a motion put forth by Abdulsamad Dasuki (PDP, Sokoto), the House recommended that members of the armed forces and senior citizens be provided with preferential treatment at all public transport stations nationwide.

During the discussion, Dasuki highlighted the Minister of Aviation’s announcement that the FEC had approved the removal of all exemptions for VIPs at airports in Nigeria due to the substantial revenue deficits incurred by the Federal Government. He emphasized the importance of recognizing and honoring the sacrifices made by the men and women of the Armed Forces, who selflessly serve the nation and put their lives at risk to ensure our safety and security.
Dasuki emphasized the significance of demonstrating gratitude towards these dedicated individuals and encouraging others to appreciate their invaluable service. By exempting members of the Armed Forces from airport fees, we not only honor their commitment but also inspire future generations to consider military service as a noble calling rather than merely a means of escaping unemployment.

He stressed that it is unjust to require members of the Armed Forces to pay for airport access when they are responsible for safeguarding both citizens and visitors, whether on duty or as passengers themselves. The services provided by these individuals, while compensated, are immeasurable, especially when considering the risks they face and the sacrifices made by them and their families.
In conclusion, Dasuki asserted that failing to show appreciation for the Armed Forces through measures like the proposed exemption would undervalue their contributions and disregard the immense value they bring to the nation.
