The All Progressives Congress (APC) has refuted allegations of planned rigging made by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the upcoming governorship election in Ondo State, asserting that such claims are baseless and a reflection of the opposition’s desperation. Speaking during a press conference in Okitipupa on Wednesday, the APC Campaign Council Spokesman, Mr. Banji Okunomo, maintained that the party remains focused on securing victory for its candidate, Lucky Ayedatiwa.

Okunomo criticised the PDP for what he termed a diversionary tactic aimed at discrediting the electoral process. He stated that while the APC has been diligently campaigning across all parts of the state, the PDP has resorted to making unfounded accusations instead of presenting its agenda to the electorate. “The PDP’s repeated claims of rigging plans only expose their deep-seated frustration and lack of preparedness for the election,” Okunomo said.

Responding to the allegations of rigging, Okunomo argued that the APC’s extensive and rigorous campaign efforts contradict any insinuations of electoral manipulation. “If our party had any plans to rig the election, there would be no need for the intense mobilisation and aggressive campaigning we have conducted in recent weeks,” he noted. He emphasized that the APC has been actively engaging voters at every level, a clear indication of its commitment to winning the election through legitimate means.

Okunomo further stated that the APC has no intention of compromising the integrity of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) or undermining the electoral process. He assured that the party is determined to adhere strictly to the guidelines set by the electoral body, adding that the overwhelming support garnered during their campaign is enough to secure victory for Ayedatiwa. “We are confident that our candidate, Ayedatiwa, will emerge victorious based on the extensive groundwork laid during our campaign,” Okunomo affirmed.

Okunomo expressed confidence in the candidate’s chances, citing his human-centred governance approach over the past 10 months as a major factor in winning the people’s trust. “Ayedatiwa has demonstrated a commitment to good governance, and this has resonated well with the electorate, who are eager to show their support at the polls,” he said. Okunomo argued that the widespread acceptance of Ayedatiwa’s candidacy is a testament to his leadership style and the positive impact of his administration.

The APC spokesman also praised the party’s campaign strategy, describing it as one of the most comprehensive in the history of Ondo State. He noted that the campaign train had visited all 18 local government areas, including remote parts of the state, engaging with residents and rallying support for the party’s candidate. “Everywhere we went, the response was overwhelmingly positive. The people expressed their satisfaction with Ayedatiwa’s performance and assured us of their votes,” Okunomo remarked.

Addressing the PDP’s alleged internal disarray, Okunomo attributed the opposition’s tactics to its waning popularity and internal divisions following its contentious governorship primaries. He suggested that the PDP should focus on rebuilding its structure rather than making baseless allegations against the APC. “The PDP’s inability to put its house in order, especially after the departure of key political figures, has weakened its position. Instead of complaining, the party should accept the reality and prepare for a defeat in the upcoming election,” Okunomo stated.

In a direct appeal to voters, Okunomo urged the people of Ondo State to disregard the PDP’s accusations and turn out en masse on election day to cast their votes for the APC. He emphasized the importance of electing a candidate like Ayedatiwa, who has a proven track record of delivering on his promises and advancing the state’s development agenda. “We encourage all voters to come out and support Ayedatiwa and his running mate, Adelami, to ensure the continuation of impactful governance and the delivery of democracy dividends,” he concluded.

With just days left before the governorship election, the political landscape in Ondo remains highly charged, as both the APC and PDP gear up for what promises to be a tightly contested poll. However, the APC’s leadership is clear in its message: despite the opposition’s claims, it is fully prepared to secure victory based on the strength of its candidate and the effectiveness of its campaign efforts.
