In a landmark event that has brought long-awaited relief to the people of Eti-Oni, Atakumosa East Local Government Area of Osun State, the Federal Government on Wednesday flagged off the construction of a N12 billion road project, marking the start of much-needed infrastructural development after over four decades of neglect.
The project, which involves the construction of a 56-kilometer road, is expected to revolutionize the local economy, improve living standards, and enhance connectivity between rural communities and commercial centers. The announcement, made by Mr. David Umahi, the Minister of Works, has been welcomed with widespread jubilation by the residents of Eti-Oni, a town renowned for its rich agricultural heritage, particularly cocoa farming. Umahi, who was represented by Mr. Oluseyi Adedipe, the Acting Controller of Works in the Osun field office, emphasized that the road would be executed in phases to ensure timely completion within a 12-month period.
The new road, which falls under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, is a significant part of the administration’s commitment to improving infrastructure across the country. It is expected to open up economically viable regions, facilitating easier transportation of agricultural products from rural farms to major commercial hubs. This is particularly crucial for a town like Eti-Oni, which is a key player in cocoa production, an important commodity that holds immense economic potential for both the community and the state.
The project is designed to transform Eti-Oni into a more accessible and commercially viable town. As Umahi noted, the road would not only improve the local economy but also serve as a gateway for residents to access essential services, markets, and other opportunities. With a state-of-the-art road network, the town’s farmers will be able to transport their produce with ease, reducing the challenges that have hindered economic growth in the region for years.
Locals expressed profound joy and appreciation for the new road construction, recognizing it as a symbol of hope and progress for the community. Thompson, a resident of Eti-Oni, could not hide his excitement as he spoke about the transformative impact the road would have on the town. “The joy, the happiness is tremendous. We cannot explain it because this road has been neglected for more than 40 years. Having fertile land but no access is like a cemetery. This road will bring our town back to life,” he said.
Thompson also emphasized that the project would invigorate the agricultural sector, inspiring young people in the area to take up farming and invest in the town’s natural resources. He expressed his gratitude to President Tinubu for the timely intervention, calling the road construction a perfect gift as the town prepares to celebrate its annual cocoa festival. “This road is more than just a gesture. It is a gift to us, the people of Atakumosa East, Eti-Oni, and Osun State. If the President can remember this rural community, it means other areas will benefit as well,” Thompson added.
The people of Eti-Oni have long struggled with inadequate infrastructure, making it difficult for them to fully capitalize on the agricultural potential of the area. Chief Musibau Gbadamosi, another community leader, expressed his appreciation for the Federal Government’s commitment to improving the town’s infrastructure. He highlighted that the town’s fertile land, which is rich in cocoa and other agricultural produce, has always been a major asset. However, without proper roads, the community had struggled to access wider markets and opportunities. With the construction of the new road, Gbadamosi is optimistic that the town’s economy will experience a significant boost, encouraging further investment in agriculture and commerce.
Gbadamosi also expressed his confidence that the road project would not only enhance agricultural activities but also improve the overall quality of life for residents. “We are grateful to President Tinubu for this gesture. It will open up the town and attract businesses. We will continue to support his administration because this is the kind of development we need,” he said.
The road construction, which is expected to be completed within the next 12 months, is a testament to the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring that no community is left behind in the quest for national development. With improved infrastructure, Eti-Oni will no longer be isolated but will join the broader economic network, paving the way for future growth, investment, and prosperity.
