The Federal Government has vowed to conduct a thorough investigation into the recent airstrike in Sokoto State, which resulted in the deaths of 10 individuals in Gidan Bisa and Runtuwa villages, Silame Local Government Area.
Dr. Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defence, made this assurance during a condolence visit to Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto. Matawalle expressed the Federal Government’s determination to ensure justice and accountability for the incident while reiterating its commitment to the safety and security of all Nigerians.
In a statement released by Mr. Abubakar Bawa, the Chief Press Secretary to the Sokoto State Governor, Matawalle conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s concern over the tragedy. He noted that the airstrike was the result of flawed intelligence, as the affected area was reported to be a stronghold of the Lakurawa bandits.
Matawalle also praised Governor Aliyu for his proactive approach in requesting a military base in the state, a move aimed at bolstering security in Sokoto. The Minister reassured the state of continued military support, including the provision of essential equipment and resources.
Governor Aliyu, while expressing his condolences, called on the military to enhance its intelligence and surveillance mechanisms to prevent such incidents in the future. He described the incident as unfortunate and emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to uncover the root causes.
The governor commended the military and other security agencies for their ongoing efforts to combat banditry in the state and expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his unwavering support.
