The Anambra State Government has reiterated Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s commitment to securing the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Refuting claims that Soludo is against Kanu’s freedom, Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, described the allegations as baseless propaganda from opposition politicians unsettled by the governor’s achievements.
In a statement on Tuesday, Mefor highlighted Soludo’s efforts to ensure Kanu’s release, including a visit to him at the Department of State Services (DSS) facility. During the visit, Soludo offered to secure Kanu’s release on administrative bail, pledging to guarantee his availability for any legal or administrative processes. These actions, Mefor noted, demonstrate Soludo’s genuine concern for peace and stability in the Southeast.
The government clarified that Soludo’s recent comments about insecurity in the Southeast were misinterpreted. Soludo had expressed concern that criminal elements had hijacked the Biafran agitation, turning it into an enterprise for personal gain through kidnapping, robbery, and other crimes. According to Soludo, Kanu and IPOB have repeatedly dissociated themselves from these criminal activities.
Mefor further stressed that Soludo’s stance is not opposition to Kanu’s release but a call to address the broader security challenges plaguing the region. The governor’s belief, he said, is that while Kanu’s freedom could restore some stability, it is crucial to tackle the criminal elements exploiting the agitation to harm the Southeast’s progress.
The commissioner also announced that the Anambra State Government would launch a new security initiative, “Operation Udo Ga-Achi” (Operation Peace Shall Reign), to combat insecurity. The program, scheduled to start in January, will integrate advanced surveillance technology, trained forest guards, and community collaboration to curb criminal activities across the state.
Mefor urged the public to disregard misinformation about Soludo’s stance and focus on the governor’s efforts to promote peace and development.
