The Democratic Front (TDF) has applauded Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, for his recent endorsement of President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform bills, currently before the National Assembly. The group, in a statement signed by its Chairman, Malam Danjuma Muhammad, and Secretary, Chief Wale Adedayo, described the governor’s shift in stance as a significant step forward.
Governor Sule, who initially opposed the reforms alongside other northern governors, attributed the earlier resistance to a lack of understanding of the proposed bills. Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Sule clarified his position, emphasizing the value of the reforms after engaging with stakeholders. TDF commended the governor’s statesmanship and encouraged other northern governors to support the reforms to expedite their passage.
The group emphasized that President Tinubu’s tax reforms are designed to establish a progressive national tax system that aligns with the economic and political aspirations of Nigerians. It also praised the ongoing stakeholder engagement by the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform, led by Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, and the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) Chairman, Zach Adedeji.
TDF further noted that the tax bills aim to exempt the economically disadvantaged from tax burdens until they achieve significant productivity levels. The reforms, it argued, would also empower sub-national governments to create more jobs and wealth, contrary to claims by critics that the reforms might harm the northern region or other parts of the country.
