Doncic excelled in the crucial moments of the fourth quarter, accumulating 15 of his 33 points, while Irving made a significant impact early on, scoring 24 of his 30 points in the first half.
The Dallas defense effectively contained Karl-Anthony Towns and Anthony Edwards, who are the primary scoring threats for the Timberwolves. Edwards scored 19 points and Towns added 16 points, but they struggled to find their rhythm, shooting a combined 12 for 36 from the field. A three-pointer by Edwards gave Minnesota a 102-98 lead with 3:37 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Dallas responded strongly with an eight-point run, including a key three-pointer by P.J. Washington and a clutch jump shot by Doncic to make the score 106-102. Reflecting on the game, Doncic stated, “We had to put in a lot of effort to win this one.”
Acknowledging the significance of the victory in game one, Doncic emphasized the team’s determination to perform better, recognizing Irving’s pivotal role in the game. Irving, on the other hand, revealed that he used comments made by Edwards as motivation for his performance, highlighting the competitive mentality within the team.
Jaden McDaniels led the scoring for the Timberwolves with 24 points, showcasing his accuracy from beyond the arc. Edwards contributed significantly with 11 rebounds and eight assists alongside his 19 points. Dallas dominated the inside game, outscoring Minnesota 62-38 in the paint, with Washington and Dereck Lively securing seven rebounds each.
The upcoming game two of the series, which will also take place in Minnesota, is expected to be a tougher challenge according to Irving. He stressed the importance of sticking to their game plan and being prepared for a strong response from the Timberwolves in the next game.
