The House of Representatives has taken swift action in response to the devastating floods in Edo State, urging the Federal Government to provide emergency relief to the affected communities. The call for action follows a motion of

urgent public importance sponsored by House Leader, Prof Julius Ihonvbere, which was adopted during Wednesday’s

plenary session.

The motion highlighted the unprecedented flooding disaster that ravaged Ekeke-Erah and the massive windstorm that

affected Ake, Amoya-Otuo, and other communities in Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State. The disaster

resulted in widespread destruction of homes, infrastructure, farmlands, and livelihoods, plunging the affected

communities into total darkness.

Prof Ihonvbere emphasized the need for emergency assistance, including relief food, medical materials, and

reconstruction of damaged infrastructure. He commended the Edo State Government, the Leader of the Edo State

House of Assembly, and the Local Government for their prompt response to the disaster, but stressed that the

magnitude of the disaster requires additional support from the Federal Government.

The House of Representatives has urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide immediate

relief materials to the affected communities, including food, water, blankets, mats, shelter, and medical supplies. The

Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs has also been charged with urgently responding to the needs of the people affected

by the disasters.

The motion enjoyed overwhelming support from lawmakers present at Wednesday’s plenary, demonstrating the

House’s commitment to addressing the plight of the flood victims. The Federal Government’s prompt response to the

disaster is crucial in alleviating the suffering of the affected communities.

In a similar vein, the Edo State Government has released over N300 million in relief materials to support flood victims

in the state. Governor Godwin Obaseki has also urged residents in flood-prone areas to relocate to higher ground and

to Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps set up by the state government.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has also distributed relief materials to flood victims in Edo

State. The agency has provided social relief care packs, nutritional packs, livelihood items, and building materials to

affected communities. As the flood situation in Edo State continues to unfold, it is essential that all stakeholders work

together to provide relief and support to the affected communities.

The House of Representatives’ call for federal intervention is a crucial step in addressing the disaster and ensuring

that the victims receive the necessary assistance. The Edo State Government’s efforts to provide relief materials and

relocate residents to safer areas are commendable.

However, the magnitude of the disaster requires a collective response from all levels of government and

stakeholders.Key Phrases: Edo State, House of Rep
