Sokoto Governor Aliyu Accused of Plotting Sultan’s Dethronement, MURIC Claims

The Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has accused Governor Ahmed Aliyu of plotting the removal of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III.
In a statement issued on Monday, Prof Isiaq Akintola, the Executive Director of MURIC, expressed concern over the Governor’s alleged intentions, emphasizing that Nigerian Muslims firmly oppose any attempts to depose the Sultan.
This development comes amidst the ongoing controversy and tension surrounding the recent removal of several monarchs in Kano State. It is worth noting that Governor Aliyu had previously deposed 15 traditional rulers on various grounds.

Akintola has suggested that there are indications suggesting that the Governor may take action against the Sultan of Sokoto in the near future, using similar justifications employed for the removal of the 15 traditional rulers.

“MURIC cautions the Governor to carefully consider his actions. The Sultan’s position is not merely a traditional one but also carries significant religious importance. Additionally, his authority extends beyond Sokoto and encompasses the entirety of Nigeria. He serves as the spiritual leader of all Nigerian Muslims,” Akintola remarked.

Akintola went on to caution Governor Aliyu against compelling Nigerian Muslims to resort to extreme measures.
The head of MURIC noted that the acceptance of a traditional ruler as a leader has long been acknowledged by Nigerian Muslims as a structural weakness that must be tolerated. He highlighted the historical example of when Sultan Ibrahim Dasuki was deposed by military governor Col Yakubu Muazu on April 20, 1996, underscoring that Nigerian Muslims may have to make a difficult decision if the authority of the Sultan continues to be undermined.
In conclusion, MURIC emphasized the importance of amending Sokoto State’s chieftaincy laws to protect the Sultan from potential removal, urging Northern elites and Islamic scholars to intervene promptly. The organization stressed that swift action is essential to prevent any further humiliation or embarrassment to Nigerian Muslims.
