AI Experts to Transform Nigeria’s Education System

The Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) has recently emphasized the need for a significant overhaul of the country’s education sector. They are advocating for a transformation that would make teaching and learning more accessible, affordable, and efficient through the use of modern technology. This call for action reflects the growing recognition of the potential that technology holds in revolutionizing educational practices.

Sirajo Aliyu, the president of NCS, articulated this vision during an interview held in Lagos. He envisions a future where technology fundamentally changes the way Nigerians approach learning and work. According to Aliyu, NCS, as the leading organization for IT professionals in Nigeria, is committed to making this vision a reality by leveraging advancements in technology.

“We are at the forefront of cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence (AI) and data mining. Our organization is dedicated to developing innovative programs that not only address current needs but also anticipate and shape the future of information technology,” said Aliyu. This forward-thinking approach is central to NCS’s mission.

One of the key areas where technology could have a profound impact is in the field of education. Aliyu pointed out that incorporating AI into educational institutions could transform how students and educators interact. For example, online classes could become more prevalent, offering resources that are readily accessible, and allowing students to learn at their own pace. He praised the Nigerian Communications Commission for its efforts to enhance infrastructure and reduce broadband costs, which is crucial for making online education more viable. According to Aliyu, for just N100, students could gain access to data needed for learning, paving the way for a future where online education is the norm rather than the exception.

In a recent virtual event hosted by NCS, several IT experts echoed Aliyu’s sentiments. The event, which was the third “Technology-Enhanced Learning/Computer Education Forum,” saw professionals from various fields calling for a transformation in Nigeria’s education sector. These experts stressed the importance of adopting innovative solutions and preparing for a future where AI plays a significant role in education.

Professor Abejide Ibijola from the Johannesburg Business School shared his insights on the challenges faced by African countries, including Nigeria. He emphasized that many of these challenges are shared across the continent. Ibijola underscored the need for young people to receive advanced, future-oriented training that fosters innovation and prepares them for a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

He argued that quality teaching should be a priority if the continent aims to integrate AI effectively into education.
