Abia PDP Warns Governor Otti Over Alleged Marginalization of Lawmakers

The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged Governor Alex Otti to ensure equal rights for all lawmakers at the state House of Assembly, regardless of their political affiliations.
In a letter to the governor, the state chairman of the PDP, Elder Abraham Amah, expressed “deep concern” over the current state of democratic governance in Abia State. “I am alarmed by the apparent abuse of democratic ideals that has been observed, particularly concerning the representation and treatment of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Abia State House of Assembly,” Amah said.
Amah noted that the PDP holds 12 seats in the House, constituting a significant portion of the Assembly. He argued that the exclusion of the PDP from positions that rightfully belong to the majority party undermines the democratic process and sets a troubling precedent for governance in the state.

Amah also criticized the Labour Party, which has 11 members, for entering into a coalition with the APC, which has only one seat. He argued that this arrangement is “utterly inappropriate” and threatens the foundation of democracy.
“If the Labour Party, with its 11 members, has entered into a coalition with the APC, which has only one seat, it would be utterly inappropriate for the LP to claim all positions designated for both the majority and the minority parties,” Amah said.
The Abia PDP boss urged Governor Otti to take immediate action to rectify the situation. “Restoring fairness and sanity to the political landscape is essential in preventing further escalation and maintaining peace within our state,” Amah said.
Amah emphasized the need for the governor to demonstrate his commitment to democratic values. “It is vital that we demonstrate our commitment to democratic values, not only for the sake of our current governance but also to set a positive example for future generations who are observing our actions and decisions,” Amah said.
The PDP chairman implored the governor to reconsider his approach and prioritize inclusivity and fairness in the Abia State House of Assembly. “Let us work together to uphold the values of democracy that we all cherish and create an environment conducive to constructive dialogue and cooperation,” Amah said.
