The Abia State House of Assembly has completed the screening and confirmation process for the new members of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) as well as the Auditor General, following nominations made by Governor Alex Otti. This decision was announced during a recent session of the House.

Deputy Speaker Mr. Augustine Okezie, who presided over the plenary, revealed that Professor George Chima has been confirmed as the Chairman-designate of ABSIEC. Professor Chima is expected to lead the commission, overseeing the conduct of elections and other electoral activities in the state.

Alongside him, Dr. Kelechi Okere, Joseph Uzoma Akara, Nkemdirim Kalu, and Bertha Ehumadu were also confirmed as members of ABSIEC. These new members are tasked with supporting the Chairman in ensuring free, fair, and credible elections in Abia State.

However, two of the nominees for the commission, Ekele Queen Ahuchogu and Onyemauche Elekwe, were not present during the screening. The Deputy Speaker announced that these individuals would be scheduled for screening on another date once they are available to appear before the House.

In addition to the electoral commission confirmations, the Abia State House of Assembly also approved Governor Otti’s nominee for the position of Auditor General. Mrs. Eke Ngozi Ogbonnaya-Ugwo was confirmed for this position, and she will be responsible for auditing state government accounts and ensuring financial accountability within the state.

The Assembly further made significant legislative progress by passing the Abia State 2024 Appropriation Virement Bill, 2024. This bill involves reallocating funds within the 2024 state budget. Specifically, it authorizes the transfer of 171 billion, 74 million, 664 thousand, 965 naira.

This substantial sum is designated for various government services and projects for the year ending December 31, 2024. The bill is a crucial component of the state’s financial planning, ensuring that resources are allocated efficiently to meet the needs of the government and the people of Abia State.

The passage of this bill reflects the Assembly’s commitment to managing the state’s finances effectively and supporting ongoing and new initiatives. Overall, the recent session of the Abia State House of Assembly marks a significant step in the state’s governance, with key appointments and budgetary adjustments aimed at enhancing administrative and electoral functions.
