Abia State is on the cusp of acquiring an airport, as a delegation from the Federal Government visited the state yesterday to commence the realization of this endeavor.
In a meeting with the delegation from the Federal Ministry of Aviation, headed by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Emmanuel Meribeole, in Umuahia, Governor Alex Otti pledged that his administration would spearhead efforts to ensure the prompt establishment of an Abia Airport.
Governor Otti, expressing eagerness to witness the establishment of an Abia Airport within the next year, highlighted that besides identifying the land for the project, negotiations with the landowners have also commenced to facilitate the timely commencement of the project.
“The selection of the airport’s location is crucial, and we have pinpointed the specific area we are currently considering. We didn’t just identify the site; we also took the extra step of engaging with the landowners of the vast expanse of land, as it is a substantial parcel. Discussions with them have already begun.
“We are working with a sense of urgency. I am confident that all the necessary approvals and resources will be expedited for your access without delay. Rest assured, we are fully prepared to provide everything you need.”
“We anticipate that within the next year, an airport will be established. While we may not complete the entire project within that timeframe, once we have the runway and terminal building in place, the remaining components will follow gradually, “Otti informed the delegation.
The governor expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for authorizing the establishment of an airstrip for the state, which has been included in the 2024 budget.
He also commended the Minister of Aviation, Mr. Festus Keyamo, and his team for their alignment with his vision of expediting the establishment of an airport in Abia.
The head of the delegation and Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Aviation, Dr. Meribeole, lauded Governor Otti’s forward-thinking approach towards enhancing Abia, stating that their visit aimed to ensure that the approved land for the project aligns with the intended development.
Dr. Meribeole highlighted the benefits of Abia having an airport, emphasizing that it would facilitate job creation, boost commerce, generate revenue, and promote overall development in the state.
