Sporting Lisbon has relieved Ruben Amorim’s replacement, Joao Pereira, just over a month at the helm. The club also appointed Rui Borges as the new head coach on Thursday.
Pereira was appointed coach when Amorim left for Manchester United, a major English team. Pereira suffered because of Sporting’s recent slump in performance.
After a 0-0 tie with Gil Vicente last weekend, the capital club—which had a perfect record in the Primeira Liga this season prior to his takeover—lost first place in the Portuguese top division to Benfica.
Pereira’s first four games as manager of the Premier League and Champions League ended in defeat.
The 43-year-old Borges guided Vitoria Guimaraes to a second-place finish in the UEFA Conference League league phase while serving as their coach.
