The Court of Appeal in Akure, Ondo State, has delivered a landmark judgment, upholding the death sentence handed to Dr. Ramon Adedoyin, the owner of Hilton Honours Hotel, Ile-Ife, over the murder of Timothy Adegoke, a former Master’s student of Obafemi Awolowo University.
The incident, which occurred on November 5th, 2021, sent shockwaves throughout the country, with many calling for justice to be served. The Osun State High Court had initially sentenced Adedoyin and two members of his staff, Adeniyi Aderogba and Oyetunde Kazeem, to death by hanging.
The Appeal Court’s judgment, delivered on Thursday, January 23, 2025, affirmed the verdict of the lower court, stating that Adedoyin was properly convicted and sentenced to death. The court’s decision brings closure to the family of the deceased and serves as a deterrent to others who may be contemplating similar crimes.
The case against Adedoyin was built on evidence that he had orchestrated the murder of Adegoke, who had checked into the hotel on November 5th, 2021. The prosecution presented witnesses who testified that Adedoyin had instructed his staff to kill Adegoke, and that they had carried out the instruction.
The defense team, on the other hand, argued that the prosecution’s case was based on circumstantial evidence and that Adedoyin was innocent of the crime. However, the Appeal Court rejected this argument, stating that the evidence presented by the prosecution was sufficient to prove Adedoyin’s guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
The judgment has been hailed as a victory for justice, with many praising the judiciary for its role in ensuring that those who commit crimes are held accountable. The family of the deceased has also expressed gratitude to the court for delivering justice.
