The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a strong warning that the Federal Government should be held accountable for any unrest in Nigeria’s public universities. This statement comes amid ongoing frustrations over unresolved issues that have plagued the educational system for years.
In a statement signed by Comrade Dr. Salim Ahmad, the Chairman of ASUU at Federal University, Dutse, the union pointed out that Nigeria’s public universities have been in a state of industrial disharmony for over four years.
This turmoil has led to two significant and costly strike actions, which could have been avoided with better communication and responsiveness from the government.
ASUU has made several attempts to engage in meaningful dialogue with government officials, including the President, to address the outstanding issues stemming from previous agreements.
Unfortunately, they report that the current Tinubu administration has shown a lack of willingness to engage constructively, similar to the administration of former President Buhari.
The union emphasized that their ongoing efforts to negotiate reasonable solutions have been met with indifference. This lack of attention to their legitimate demands prompted the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU to hold a critical meeting at the University of Ibadan from August 17 to 18, 2024.
During this meeting, members extensively discussed the pressing issues facing the education sector and collectively decided to issue a 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to address their concerns.
This ultimatum was formally communicated to the government through the Minister of Education in a letter dated August 20, 2024. However, ASUU has expressed disappointment that, after the ultimatum expired, the government has not demonstrated any genuine commitment to resolving the issues at hand.
ASUU’s statement highlighted that the failure to meet both financial and non-financial demands is creating an environment ripe for unrest in Nigeria’s public universities. The union has consistently underscored the importance of adequate funding, improved working conditions, and better resources for both staff and students.
As tensions rise, ASUU’s leadership remains vigilant, ready to take further actions if their demands are not met. They believe that a proactive approach is essential to avoid further disruptions in the academic calendar, which could negatively impact students’ education and future prospects.
The union’s warning serves as a call to action for the Federal Government to prioritize education and work collaboratively with ASUU to create a stable and productive environment in Nigeria’s universities.
The future of the country’s education system depends on a commitment to dialogue and a willingness to address the critical issues facing public universities today. As
