The Yobe State Police Command has issued a warning about a potential threat to the upcoming #EndBadGovernance protest scheduled for August. According to the command’s spokesperson, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, there are indications that Boko Haram insurgents are planning to infiltrate the protest. This information comes from recent intelligence reports that suggest foreign mercenaries might be employed to incite violence and cause property damage during the demonstration.
In his statement on Saturday, Abdulkarim urged all prospective protesters to exercise heightened caution. He emphasized that while the police acknowledge and respect the constitutional right of citizens to peaceful assembly, the current security situation in Yobe State presents significant challenges.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Garba Ahmed, has expressed concern about the timing of the protest, given the recent escalation of insurgent activities in the region.
Abdulkarim highlighted that the recent violence in Gujba Local Government Area, in Yobe state including an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion, has exacerbated security fears. The police command is particularly wary of the potential for additional security issues that could arise from the protest, stressing that they are not fully prepared to handle further threats at this time.
The spokesperson specifically addressed the need for protesters to provide detailed information about their planned demonstration. This includes outlining proposed protest routes and assembly points, specifying the expected duration of the protest, and providing the names and contact details of the protest leaders and organizers.
Such measures are intended to help the police effectively manage the event, deploy appropriate personnel and resources, and minimize risks of violence, property damage, or other criminal activities.
Abdulkarim’s statement underscored that providing this information is crucial for ensuring a smooth and safe protest. By doing so, the police will be able to establish clear communication channels, designate specific routes and areas for the protest, and implement strategies to prevent the event from being hijacked by criminal elements.
This approach is aimed at maintaining public order and ensuring that the protest does not devolve into violence.
The police command is urging all protesters to cooperate with law enforcement, adhere to legal requirements, and follow global best practices for peaceful assembly. Abdulkarim reiterated the police’s commitment to working with the public to facilitate peaceful expression while upholding public safety and order.
The Yobe State Police Command is taking proactive steps to address potential security threats associated with the upcoming protest. The command emphasizes the importance of coordination between protesters and law enforcement to prevent any disruption and ensure that the demonstration proceeds without incident.
The warning serves as a reminder of the complex security landscape in the region and the need for vigilance to protect both participants and the wider community.
