Chelsea Women have named Sonia Bompastor, former manager of Lyon, as the new head coach in a four-year agreement on Wednesday. The 43-year-old is taking over from Emma Hayes, who guided the team to 14 significant titles in her 12-year tenure.
Bompastor, who has had considerable success in France, secured seven trophies with Lyon over the last three seasons. In a statement released by the club, she expressed her commitment to the new venture, aiming to fulfill the club’s ambitions, support the staff, and inspire the players. She also expressed her desire to uphold Emma’s legacy and build on the progress made in recent years. The journey is about to commence.
Hayes, who has assumed the role of head coach for the USA women’s national team, concluded her time at Chelsea on a high note as the team secured their fifth consecutive English title on the season’s final day earlier this month. Unfortunately, Bompastor’s tenure at Lyon did not conclude as she had hoped, with the team suffering a 2-0 defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League final last weekend.
