Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, died on Tuesday night in Lagos after a period of illness, as confirmed by Presidential Adviser Bayo Onanuga. The 56-year-old Army Chief’s passing was announced in a statement titled, “Announcement of the Passing of Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja.”
President Bola Tinubu conveyed his condolences to the Lagbaja family and the Nigerian military, commending the late officer’s commitment and contributions to national defense. “We honor his invaluable service to our country,” Tinubu’s statement read.
Lagbaja had been appointed to lead the Army in June 2023 and had since been recognized for his exemplary leadership in multiple security operations, including missions in Benue and Kaduna States. His military career included roles as a platoon commander in the 93 Battalion and operational command of the 72 Special Forces Battalion.
A graduate of the U.S. Army War College, Lagbaja is survived by his wife, Mariya, and two children. Due to his recent illness, President Tinubu appointed Olufemi Oluyede as acting Chief of Army Staff last week, and he was officially decorated as Lieutenant General on Tuesday.
President Tinubu praised Oluyede’s dedication to the nation’s security, affirming his confidence in Oluyede’s ability to lead at this critical time.
