CNPP Urges President Tinubu to Suspend Mele Kyari and Investigate Fuel Subsidy Issues

The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has issued a strong call for the suspension of Mele Kyari, the current head of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL). In a statement released on Sunday, CNPP deputy spokesman James Ezema underscored the need for immediate action in light of various serious allegations against Kyari and the corporation.

The CNPP is urging the relevant authorities to take decisive steps by suspending Kyari and initiating an independent investigation into accusations of fraudulent fuel subsidy practices. They also called for a probe into the alleged importation of substandard petroleum products and the mismanagement of the Port Harcourt Refinery. These calls for action come in response to mounting concerns about the integrity and effectiveness of Nigeria’s oil sector.

Ezema emphasized that the CNPP believes such measures are essential to safeguarding the Nigerian economy and alleviating the severe hardships faced by the populace. The organization argues that these issues not only threaten economic stability but also exacerbate the suffering of everyday Nigerians. Despite the government’s repeated increases in petrol prices—from N167 to nearly N700 per liter—petrol remains in short supply, compounding the difficulties faced by citizens.

In addition to the concerns about fuel prices, the CNPP has expressed alarm over comments made by the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II. The Emir suggested that there are individuals within the NNPC who are resistant to ending the allegedly lucrative subsidy fraud. The CNPP concurs with this viewpoint, asserting that Kyari’s failure to address and rectify these issues undermines his suitability to continue leading the NNPCL.

The CNPP has also voiced serious concerns regarding the quality of petroleum products being imported into Nigeria. They argue that the importation of substandard products poses significant risks to public health and safety. This issue, coupled with the high costs associated with refurbishing the Port Harcourt Refinery, underscores what the CNPP describes as ongoing mismanagement and inefficiency within NNPC Limited.

The CNPP is dissatisfied with the substantial financial resources expended on the refinery’s rehabilitation, describing it as indicative of the broader problems within the organization. They believe that the funds used for these projects have not resulted in the anticipated improvements, further highlighting issues of mismanagement.

In light of these concerns, the CNPP has called upon President Bola Tinubu to take urgent and effective action. They urge the President to ensure that Nigerians receive justice and to address the issues within the oil sector comprehensively. The CNPP stresses that it is crucial for the government to take these allegations seriously and work towards resolving them to prevent further economic and social hardship for the Nigerian people.
