Cristiano Ronaldo set a new record for the most goals scored in a single season of the Saudi Pro League by netting his 34th and 35th goals in Al Nassr’s final match of the season.
“I do not chase records, records chase me, “the 39-year-old Portuguese striker shared on Twitter following the match.
The former Real Madrid and Manchester United icon scored just before halftime and then again in the 69th minute with a header as Al Nassr triumphed 4-2 over Al Ittihad at home on Monday. The previous record was held by Moroccan Abderrazak Hamdallah, who scored 34 goals in the 2018-2019 season.
Al Nassr had already secured a second-place finish, ending 14 points behind champions Al Hilal.
Ronaldo made the move to Al Nassr in Riyadh in December 2022, marking the beginning of a trend of foreign players joining the Saudi league on highly lucrative deals.
The Euro 2016-winning captain of Portugal has been named to the squad for the upcoming tournament in Germany next month, which will be his 11th international competition. He holds the record for the most appearances in men’s international football with 206 caps and has scored an unprecedented 128 goals.
