Defence Minister Urges NDC Graduates to Champion Democracy for Africa’s Unity and Development

The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has called on the graduates of the National Defence College (NDC) Course 32 to champion and advance democratic principles as essential tools for achieving unity and development across Africa.

Speaking at the NDC Course 32 Graduation Lecture, which was themed “Democracy Beyond the Ballot Box: A Pathway to Africa’s Unity and Development,” the Minister highlighted that democracy extends far beyond just holding elections. He emphasized that democratic principles are crucial for addressing the continent’s most urgent challenges.

“Democracy in Africa is not confined to the act of voting in elections. It encompasses a broader range of practices that are vital for addressing various societal issues,” Abubakar stated. He stressed the importance of governance that includes all citizens in decision-making processes, not just during elections but throughout the political cycle.

“By focusing on transparency and inclusivity, democracy can build greater trust in institutions and foster a more unified society. This unity, driven by shared goals and collective responsibilities, is essential for driving sustainable development,” he added.

The Minister also praised regional organizations such as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU) for their significant role in promoting democratic governance throughout the continent.

He underscored their efforts in setting regional and continental standards, supporting member states in upholding democratic principles, and addressing crucial issues like trade, security, and climate change. “This regional cooperation, rooted in democratic values, enhances our ability to solve problems collectively and drives development efforts more effectively,” Abubakar noted.

Abubakar urged the graduates to apply the strategic knowledge and skills they have acquired to advance democracy and create a secure environment conducive to development in Africa. He pointed out that development cannot flourish without security.
“Development and security are intertwined. You must leverage the expertise you have gained to foster a secure environment that supports the development Africa is striving for,” he stressed.

The graduation event also featured a speech by former Tanzanian President H.E. Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, who served as the Guest Speaker.

In his closing remarks, Abubakar expressed optimism that democratic values will continue to drive unity and progress across Africa. He called for a collective effort to build a strong and united continent, urging everyone to “embrace democratic norms as a way to achieve Africa’s unity and development.”

Additionally, Abubakar recently delivered a lecture titled “Strategic Defence Management in Nigeria: Ministry of Defence in Perspective” to the NDC Course 32 participants in Abuja.

He outlined the comprehensive approach required for effective Defence Management, emphasizing the need for strong leadership, clear communication, integrated planning, and adaptability in managing defense operations effectively.
