The Delta State government is making significant progress with its new minimum wage implementation. On Wednesday, Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, the State Commissioner for Information, provided an update on this development during a press briefing that followed the State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting.
Dr. Osuoza announced that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has directed the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, and the Commissioner for Finance, Chief Fidelis Tilije, to initiate discussions with the State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). These discussions will focus on how to effectively implement the new minimum wage across the state. The primary goal is to ensure that the wage adjustments align with the state’s economic conditions and meet the needs of the workforce.
In addition to wage discussions, Governor Oborevwori addressed the ongoing economic hardships affecting many citizens. He has tasked the Commissioner for Agriculture and the Chief Job Creation Officer with creating programs aimed at alleviating these challenges, particularly for the youth in the state. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to improving the economic well-being of its residents through targeted support and innovative solutions.
During the briefing, State Commissioner for Works (Rural and Riverine Roads) Mr. Charles Aniagwu emphasized that recent approvals from the EXCO are part of Governor Oborevwori’s broader development plans. These plans are designed to benefit a substantial portion of the state, with 23 out of 25 local government areas set to receive direct benefits from these new approvals. This focus on widespread development underscores the administration’s commitment to equitable progress across the state.
Furthermore, Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads) Comrade Reuben Izeze discussed the recent approval for addressing gully erosion along the Okpanam-Ibusa bypass Road. This approval is crucial for reclaiming areas affected by erosion, which will help sustain the new road infrastructure and prevent future damage. The project aims to improve road safety and longevity by addressing environmental challenges.
In the health sector, Commissioner for Health Dr. Joseph Onojaeme revealed that the EXCO has approved the purchase of two Computerized Tomography (CT) scanning machines. One machine will be installed at the Central Hospital in Warri, and the other at the Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH) in Oghara. These machines will significantly enhance the state’s diagnostic capabilities, helping to detect diseases and internal injuries more effectively. Dr. Onojaeme highlighted that this investment is a major step forward in improving healthcare services for all residents of Delta State.
Additionally, the EXCO has approved the renovation of over 150 primary health centers across the state. Dr. Onojaeme stressed that maintaining these facilities is critical for effective healthcare delivery, as well-maintained primary health centers can address a significant portion of health challenges.
Lastly, the EXCO has approved a payment of N3.55 billion as counterpart funding for the 2024 Universal Basic Education Programme. This funding aims to support educational initiatives across the state. In another notable decision, Obi Sunday Ubaka Ogboli was appointed as the Obi of Issele-Mkpitime in Aniocha North Local Government Area, marking a significant local leadership development.
