South African Dricus du Plessis successfully defended his UFC middleweight title on Sunday, achieving a fourth-round submission victory over his fierce rival Israel Adesanya in a highly anticipated match at Perth Arena.
In the main event of UFC 305, du Plessis appeared to be struggling against the two-time former champion until he executed a remarkable takedown that secured his 185-pound championship.
With this victory, du Plessis (22-2) has extended his winning streak to ten fights, having initially captured the title by defeating the controversial Sean Strickland in January.
“I came in here to die for this belt,” du Plessis stated. “I came here to take it home. Here I am, still the champion.”
The event took place in front of a sold-out crowd of 15,000 at Perth Arena, where Adesanya (24-4) received considerable support and seemed to hold an advantage for much of the contest until he succumbed to du Plessis’ rear-naked choke.
“I’m disappointed, but at the same time I’m proud because this is the best I’ve felt and looked,” remarked the Nigeria-born New Zealander, who was making his return following an unexpected loss to Strickland in September of the previous year. “I just had the better man on the night and I’ll give him respect for that.”
Du Plessis entered the Octagon accompanied by South African rugby captain Siya Kolisi and second-rower Eben Etzebeth, as his nation’s anthem resonated throughout the venue. The bout generated significant excitement, particularly after the fighters had exchanged heated words leading up to the event.
They were originally scheduled to compete in Sydney last year, but du Plessis was unable to participate due to injury.
The fight commenced with a cautious pace amidst a charged atmosphere, with the taller Adesanya, a former kickboxer, utilizing his reach to counter du Plessis’ aggression. However, du Plessis found his rhythm and delivered a stunning blow that left Adesanya reeling, ultimately leading to his victory.
