After his dramatic victory over Croatian opponent Filip Hrgovic in the final moments of the match, Daniel Dubois has issued a challenge to former unified world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua for an anticipated heavyweight fight.
Dubois, 26, had a difficult start in the fourth fight of the 5 v 5 tournament in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Saturday night, with Hrgovic dominating the initial rounds.
Despite the tough beginning, the British pugilist, who currently holds the title of IBF interim world champion, gradually found his rhythm in the fight and landed impactful punches that caused his Croatian adversary to bleed. In the seventh round, the boxer from Greenwich seized the opportunity and unleashed a series of devastating punches on Hrgovic, prompting referee John Latham to intervene and call the doctor as Hrgovic retreated to a neutral corner.
Following a brief assessment, the fight was halted, and Dubois was declared the IBF interim world heavyweight champion. This victory has paved the way for a potential showdown with Joshua later this year.
Expressing his thoughts on the proposed match, Dubois stated, “I am eager for the chance to face AJ and welcome the challenge. This is my moment.” He further added, “I hold immense respect for him, overcoming this ordeal was a valuable lesson for me. Securing the belt has motivated me to look ahead. I initially started slow but with the guidance from my corner, Frank Warren, and my father.”
“I absorbed some hits, but they served as a wake-up call. The initial punches were sharp, but they jolted me into action. I am immensely proud of my performance. This entire journey has been a learning curve, and now we are back at the top. It has been quite a ride.”
According to a report from The Mirror, promoter Frank Warren hinted that the potential fight could take place at Wembley Stadium in London in September.
