The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the September 21 Edo governorship election, Asue Ighodalo, has expressed unwavering confidence in Nigeria’s judiciary as the election tribunal proceedings intensify. Speaking in Benin on Thursday outside the courthouse, Ighodalo assured supporters that justice would prevail, and their mandate would be reclaimed.
Addressing newsmen, Ighodalo highlighted his optimism in the judiciary’s ability to ensure a fair process despite recent challenges. He stated, “Our focus remains on reclaiming our mandate and working for the good people of Edo. We aim to eradicate poverty, eliminate fear and intimidation, and unlock the immense potential of our state.”
The candidate also condemned acts of violence and intimidation that have marred the tribunal’s proceedings. Recalling an attack by a masked gunman near the courthouse on Wednesday, he described such incidents as deliberate attempts to distract his party. However, he reaffirmed his determination, saying, “These acts will not make us take our eyes off the ball.”
Ighodalo extended gratitude to Edo citizens and PDP supporters for their resilience over the past three months. He commended their steadfastness in the face of harassment and intimidation, encouraging them to remain hopeful. “You have stayed calm and prayerful, and by God’s grace, we will reclaim our mandate and deliver the change that Edo deserves,” he assured.
He further urged the judiciary to remain impartial and uphold the principles of justice. Ighodalo expressed hope that the tribunal’s outcome would reflect the will of the people, emphasizing the importance of restoring faith in the electoral process.
