A terrifying scene unfolded at Fiorentina’s Stadio Artemio Franchi on Sunday as midfielder Edoardo Bove collapsed on the pitch during the match against Inter Milan. The 22-year-old had appeared to take a blow to his torso moments before the incident, which led to cardiac arrest. The stadium fell into silence as medical staff rushed to Bove’s aid, and the match was suspended after just 20 minutes with the score at 0-0.
After being resuscitated on the field, Bove was quickly transported to Careggi University Hospital in Florence, where he was placed in intensive care. Fiorentina later confirmed that he was under pharmacological sedation but was stable upon arrival. Initial tests ruled out any severe neurological or cardiorespiratory damage, though further evaluations were scheduled within 24 hours.
The collapse occurred shortly after Lautaro Martínez’s goal was disallowed following a VAR check. Bove had seemed disoriented after a collision with Inter’s Denzel Dumfries and had reported feeling dizzy to his team’s medical staff. Moments later, he fell to the ground, prompting immediate medical intervention from both teams.
The medical response was swift, with players and coaches forming a protective circle around the unconscious player while an ambulance was called to the pitch. The gravity of the situation affected everyone present, as memories of previous tragedies in football, such as the death of Fiorentina’s captain Davide Astori in 2018, resurfaced.
Bove’s family, along with Fiorentina’s management, including coach Raffaele Palladino and sporting director Daniele Pradé, were present at the hospital to support the player. The club expressed gratitude for the swift medical response and reported that Bove’s condition was stable, although he remained in intensive care under observation.
