A gas explosion in Port Harcourt’s Oroazi community has left 18 individuals severely injured. The explosion occurred on Sunday evening at a gas refilling shop and caused significant damage to nearby structures. According to the Rivers State Police Command, the explosion was triggered by a welder who was repairing a refrigerator while simultaneously attempting to refill gas. The technician, along with other victims, suffered burns, although no fatalities were reported.
SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the police spokesperson, confirmed the incident, revealing that the victims included residents and passers-by, some of whom were near the shop when the explosion occurred. Among the injured were a pregnant woman, four children, and a couple. The blast also led to a chain reaction, causing other gas cylinders in the shop to explode. All victims have been promptly evacuated to the Rivers State Teaching Hospital for treatment.
Eyewitness Tamuno described the incident as devastating, highlighting the shock and distress it caused in the community. Many of the victims were rushed to the hospital, and there are hopes for their recovery. The police have launched a full investigation into the cause of the explosion, and findings will be made public once available.
