Sharing his thoughts on the progress, Dr. William S. Ruto, the President of Kenya, expressed his satisfaction with Google’s investment in digital connectivity, which represents a significant moment for Kenya, Africa, and Australia. The establishment of a new intercontinental fiber optic route is set to greatly improve global and regional digital infrastructure.Dr. Ruto emphasized the importance of this initiative in guaranteeing the reliability and resilience of the region’s connectivity, particularly following recent disruptions caused by sub-sea cable cuts.
Strengthening the digital backbone not only enhances reliability but also opens up opportunities for increased digital inclusion, innovation, and economic growth for people and businesses.According to Strive Masiyiwa, Chairman and founder of Liquid, major African cities like Nairobi, Kampala, Kigali, Lubumbashi, Lusaka, and Harare will no longer be considered remote from the coastal landing sites connecting Africa to the world. They will now serve as key points on a data superhighway capable of handling significantly more traffic than currently possible.
This project aims to create a digitally connected future that ensures every African benefit, regardless of their proximity to global technology hubs.Besides the infrastructure news, Google will enter into a Statement of Collaboration with Kenya’s Ministry of Information Communications and The Digital Economy to advance joint efforts in cybersecurity, data-driven innovation, digital upskilling, and the responsible deployment of AI for societal advantages. As part of this partnership, Google Cloud and Kenya will collaborate on enhancing Kenya’s cybersecurity.
The Department of Immigration & Citizen Services is considering the implementation of Google Cloud’s CyberShield solution and Mandiant expertise to bolster the security of its eCitizen platform.
CyberShield enables governments to enhance their cyber threat capabilities, safeguard their web-facing infrastructure, and support teams in developing skills and processes that promote effective security operations.
Recognizing the significance of investing in secure technology infrastructure for community connectivity, education expansion, and economic growth in Africa and globally, Google remains dedicated to collaborating with African communities, businesses, and governments to foster further innovation across the continent. This partnership marks an exciting new phase for Kenya and the region.
