The Inspector General of Police has instructed the maintenance of police barriers at local government secretariats in Rivers State.
The Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, affirmed the peaceful and secure state of the region, despite recent security concerns surrounding the governance of Local government areas.
He made this statement during a visit to Omuma Local Government Area, where two security personnel lost their lives during a political altercation.
The Governor’s visit was intended to assess the progress of the 14.6 km Omodu-Eberi road construction project.
He emphasized that the state is not besieged, countering assumptions made based on reports of demonstrations and the police occupation of council secretariats.
During his visit, the Governor was warmly received by enthusiastic residents, led by the Caretaker Committee Chairman, Promise Reginald.
The Governor’s reassurance follows the directive from the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to uphold the police barricade at local government secretariats in Rivers State, aiming to forestall any law and order breakdown.
IGP Egbetokun issued this directive while addressing questions from journalists in Abuja, on the sidelines of a conference with Commissioners of Police and other Senior Officers.
He indicated that the police presence at the secretariats would persist until a court of competent jurisdiction renders a verdict on the local government crisis in Rivers State.
