At the 2024 Annual Law Week hosted by the Gusau branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal delivered a powerful speech emphasising the essential role of the rule of law in strengthening democracy. He pointed out that upholding the rule of law requires technical expertise, integrity, and moral courage. As the guest of honour at the event, the governor also received an award, recognising his dedication to the people of Zamfara and his efforts in the realm of justice and governance.
Governor Lawal remarked that the theme of this year’s Law Week, “Upholding the Rule of Law: A Tool for Democratic Development,” could not have been more relevant in today’s socio-political climate. He highlighted that the legal profession is integral to enshrining the values of equity, justice, and accountability, which are critical to the nation’s progress. The governor expressed optimism that collective adherence to the rule of law would foster a stronger democracy and a more united society.
Lawal commended the NBA Gusau chapter for their unwavering commitment to justice and for continuously advocating for the rule of law in Zamfara. He encouraged legal professionals to maintain the highest ethical standards, assuring them that their dedication plays a pivotal role in ensuring access to justice for all citizens, especially the marginalized. The governor also acknowledged the Bar and Bench’s tireless efforts in ensuring impartiality and fairness in the judicial process, which builds public confidence in the legal system.
