The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is committed to engaging in a merger that prioritizes the improvement of Nigeria rather than solely seeking power.
This stance was articulated by Yunusa Tanko, the Chief Spokesperson of Obi-Datti and Director of Media at the Labour Party (LP), during an interview on Channels Television on Monday.
Reports have surfaced regarding a potential collaboration between Obi and other political figures to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
This development coincides with President Bola Tinubu’s first year in office as the President of Nigeria.
Tanko emphasized that Obi is focused on enhancing the quality of life for Nigerians, including addressing poverty, enhancing healthcare services, ensuring access to clean drinking water, and resolving the issue of power supply.
He stated, “His Excellency, Peter Gregory, is not interested in a merger solely motivated by power-seeking. He seeks a collaboration driven by ideology and a comprehensive program.”
Tanko highlighted that any merger involving Obi would be thoroughly evaluated to ensure alignment of values.
Recently, Obi and Atiku, the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023, convened to discuss national matters, sparking speculation about a potential merger.
Former House of Representatives member Tajudeen Yusuf expressed skepticism about the likelihood of Obi and Atiku joining forces, citing Atiku’s commitment to continue participating in presidential elections.
Yusuf explained, “They previously collaborated in 2019, and while it’s plausible for them to work together again, Atiku’s recent statement suggests otherwise.”
He pointed out that Atiku’s declaration of intent to remain in the political arena may hinder the possibility of a merger with Obi.
Yusuf suggested that both individuals might independently contest the 2027 election, making the prospect of a merger between them uncertain.
