Ilkay Gundogan expressed his joy at returning to what he described as the “best club in the world” following his re-signing with Manchester City from Barcelona on Friday.
The former German international achieved remarkable success during his initial tenure at City from 2016 to 2023, securing five Premier League titles and the Champions League among a total of 12 major trophies. After leaving the English champions just over a year ago to join Barcelona, the 33-year-old reportedly reached an agreement with the Catalan club to terminate his contract after only one season, facilitating his return to the Etihad Stadium.
During his single season in Spain, Gundogan scored five goals and provided 14 assists, yet Barcelona did not secure any trophies. “I am incredibly happy. It is wonderful to reunite with my teammates, the staff, and everyone with whom I shared an extraordinary and successful seven years. There were many highs and a few lows, but overall, it was an incredible experience. When you depart from a place like I did last year and spend a year away, you begin to appreciate it even more. You come to realize what you had, how remarkable that time was, and the magnitude of the club — the best club in the world,” Gundogan stated.
His return comes at a crucial time for Manchester City, following the departure of Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid for a reported fee of up to 95 million euros (£81 million, $104 million). Gundogan was Pep Guardiola’s first signing upon their arrival at the club in 2016.
He scored 60 goals in 304 appearances and will add valuable experience and depth to Guardiola’s squad as they aim for a record-extending fifth consecutive Premier League title. “Ilkay is one of the finest professionals I have ever worked with. His commitment to football and his approach to every training session is truly exceptional,” remarked City’s Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain. “Bringing him back is fantastic news for everyone. He will contribute to our primary goal of winning trophies and will also serve as an inspiration to many,” Begiristain added.
