The Cross River House of Assembly has reinstated its Speaker, Mr. Elvert Anyambem, who was recently removed from his position due to accusations of authoritarianism and financial misconduct.
During yesterday’s session, Cyril Omini, representing Yakurr I State Constituency, proposed a motion expressing confidence in the speaker, which was seconded by Kingsley Ntui, representing the Etung constituency.
Seventeen out of the 25 members of the assembly endorsed the motion to remove the speaker from office.
The members alleged that the speaker engaged in arbitrary spending, violating Section 9(1) of the state’s Legislative Funds Management Law, 2021.
Governor Bassey Otu announced on Monday that he successfully mediated a resolution within the state assembly. Otu stated that order had been restored in the house.”I held a private meeting with all twenty-five assembly members on Sunday evening.
“They unanimously agreed to restore order and maintain the current situation with Elvert Ayambem continuing in his role as speaker, “the statement read.
Additionally, in a statement released in Calabar on Monday, Ayambem expressed his gratitude towards Otu for intervening in the recent assembly crisis.
The speaker praised Otu for demonstrating exceptional leadership skills during the challenging situation. “I promise to collaborate and dedicate myself to the advancement and prosperity of both the assembly and the state as a whole.”
