INEC undermining rule of law, delaying recognition of party leadership — NNPP

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has criticised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for failing to upload the names of its newly elected national executives. The party alleged deliberate defiance of court rulings and administrative negligence by INEC.

The party’s National Secretary, Mr. Ogini Olaposi, in a statement released Friday, expressed NNPP’s frustration over INEC’s delay, noting it has disrupted party operations and hindered preparations for upcoming state and national elections.

“The NNPP is gravely concerned and utterly disappointed by INEC’s delay in complying with binding judicial pronouncements that unequivocally recognised Dr. Agbo Major as the authentic National Chairman and myself as National Secretary,” Olaposi said.

The party recalled a valid judgment delivered by the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory on April 3, 2025 (Suit No: FCT/HC/CV/5518/2024 and another from the Abia State High Court, affirming the legitimacy of its new leadership following a court-ordered national convention in March.

Despite three formal reminders—dated April 11, April 14, and a final notice on July 30—INEC has failed to act, the party said. The NNPP accused INEC of enabling confusion within the party by allowing expelled members to continue laying claim to its leadership.

“This inaction by INEC has emboldened disgruntled elements, including our expelled 2023 presidential candidate, Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso, to make misleading and provocative statements under the NNPP banner,” the statement read.

The party condemned what it described as “unfounded allegations” made by Kwankwaso and members of his defunct Kwankwasiya movement, specifically, accusations against the Federal Government on northern marginalisation.

NNPP warned that INEC’s failure to act threatens Nigeria’s democratic stability and risks damaging public confidence in the electoral process.

“Democracy cannot survive in Nigeria if those charged with protecting it continue to undermine honour and integrity,” Olaposi said. “Enough is enough,” he added.

The party said it will pursue all legal options, including contempt proceedings, to compel INEC to fulfill its constitutional duty.

“We will not be silenced, cowed, or intimidated,” the statement declared. “Nigerians deserve better, and we will keep defending the integrity of our party and the sanctity of our democracy.”
