Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has ordered the arrest of Isyaku Katanga, the chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) in Kiyawa Local Government Area, for allegedly extorting farmers by unlawfully increasing fees for subsidized farming inputs. The governor directed the Divisional Police Officer to ensure the recovery of the excess funds collected from farmers.
The order came during an unscheduled inspection tour of the area, where Governor Namadi reiterated his administration’s commitment to safeguarding farmers’ interests. He emphasized, “We will not tolerate any exploitation of our farmers. They are the backbone of our economy, and it is our duty to ensure they are treated fairly.”
Sources confirmed that the illegal fee increase impacted hundreds of farmers, creating financial strain and uncertainty regarding their potential harvest gains. Governor Namadi vowed to promptly address the situation, ensuring that those involved would face justice. He also promised to ensure that farmers would receive the full package of benefits as mandated by the Federal Government to support agricultural development.
The governor has urged AFAN members to cooperate with the investigation and return the excess fees collected, warning that failure to do so could result in further legal actions. He highlighted that his administration’s focus remains on promoting economic growth through fair agricultural practices and transparency.
Muhammad Hamisu Gumel, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, supported Namadi’s decision, stating that his experience as a former finance commissioner equipped him to effectively address such issues. Gumel added that the governor’s commitment to transparency and accountability is reflected in his swift action to protect the welfare of Jigawa’s farmers.
The move has been widely praised by local farmers, including prominent farmer Sagiru Madaki, who commended the governor for his prompt response, which he sees as a sign of dedication to the agricultural sector.
