Jos Faces Risk of 12 More School Collapses, Governor Mutfwang Alerts

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has raised concerns about the safety of approximately 12 schools in Jos, the state capital, warning that they could be at risk of collapsing. This announcement comes in the wake of a tragic incident involving the collapse of the Saints Academy Jos building, a two-storey structure that resulted in the loss of over 24 lives and left numerous others injured and hospitalized.
Governor Mutfwang took decisive action by inaugurating a Technical Committee to investigate the causes behind the collapse. The committee’s launch took place at the Twin Theatre, New Government House Little Rayfield, Jos, where the governor emphasized the urgency of the situation.

He stressed the need for a thorough investigation to ascertain the reasons for the building’s failure and to evaluate the roles played by individuals involved in its construction and maintenance.

“The investigation is crucial,” Governor Mutfwang stated, “to prevent such tragic incidents from occurring in the future.” He emphasized the importance of understanding why the building collapsed, identifying any lapses in responsibilities, and implementing measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The governor expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives, particularly of the 24 children, underscoring the critical need to prioritize safety in building standards across the state.
“We cannot compromise on the safety of innocent lives,” Governor Mutfwang asserted. “The tragic loss of 24 children serves as a stark reminder of the urgency of our mission to ensure the safety and integrity of all structures.”

In addition to addressing the immediate aftermath of the Saints Academy collapse, Governor Mutfwang directed the Secretary to the State Government to broaden the committee’s mandate. He instructed them to include an assessment of the burnt Jos Main Market, where concerns have been raised about the structural integrity and the potential risk of collapse.
The governor’s directive reflects a proactive approach toward ensuring public safety and preventing further tragedies. By extending the committee’s scope to include the Jos Main Market, he demonstrates a commitment to addressing potential risks in other public structures and environments.
The Technical Committee, tasked with investigating both incidents, comprises experts in engineering, architecture, and building safety. Their mandate includes conducting thorough inspections, reviewing construction permits and compliance with building codes, and interviewing stakeholders involved in the design, construction, and maintenance of the affected buildings.
Governor Mutfwang highlighted the need for transparency and accountability throughout the investigation process.

He emphasized that findings and recommendations from the committee’s report would inform policy decisions aimed at enhancing building regulations and enforcement mechanisms in Plateau State.

“The safety of our citizens is non-negotiable,” Governor Mutfwang reiterated. “We owe it to the families who have suffered immeasurable loss to ensure that every building in Plateau State meets the highest safety standards.”
In response to concerns raised by the community and stakeholders, Governor Mutfwang announced plans to establish a State Building Inspection Agency. This agency will be responsible for conducting regular inspections of public and private buildings across the state to ensure compliance with safety regulations and standards. The agency’s mandate will also include providing technical assistance and guidance to building owners and developers to promote safe construction practices.
Furthermore, Governor Mutfwang emphasized the importance of collaboration between government agencies, regulatory bodies, and the private sector in achieving sustainable building safety outcomes.

He underscored the need for collective responsibility in maintaining the integrity of infrastructure and protecting public safety.
“We must work together,” Governor Mutfwang urged, “to create a culture of safety and accountability in building practices. This tragic incident serves as a wake-up call for all of us to prioritize safety above all else.”
The governor assured the public that his administration would spare no effort in implementing stringent measures to safeguard lives and property in Plateau State. He called for continued support and cooperation from residents, urging them to report any concerns regarding building safety to the appropriate authorities.
As the Technical Committee commences its investigations and the State Building Inspection Agency takes shape, Governor Mutfwang remains committed to fostering a safe and secure environment for all residents of Plateau State. His proactive stance underscores a determination to learn from past tragedies and to build a resilient future where safety and integrity are paramount in all construction endeavors.
