Archbishop Matthew Kukah of the Sokoto Archdiocese conveyed to President Bola Tinubu that Nigerians are undergoing significant suffering and adversity as a result of certain governmental policies.
In a statement to State House Correspondents following a meeting at the Presidential Villa, Kukah remarked that although one year might not suffice for a comprehensive evaluation, it is apparent that Nigerians are grappling with a notably challenging situation.
He noted that the hardships faced by individuals are unintentional, yet certain policy choices may necessitate revision in order to better cater to the needs of the common populace.
Kukah underscored that the primary function of governance is to ensure the well-being of ordinary citizens, recognizing that these times are arduous but also offering an opportunity for rejuvenation, demanding dedication to establishing a just society as a foundation. The clergyman emphasized that such a transformation cannot be accomplished within a single generation, and the key lies in sustaining the effective initiatives that are currently in progress.
Kukah proposed that the government must promptly enhance the effectiveness of its communication to provide Nigerians with a clearer indication of the timeline for ameliorating the situation.
He expressed confidence that this approach would facilitate a better understanding of the challenges at hand and the government’s endeavors to address them.
“While many may argue that one year is insufficient for a comprehensive assessment, it is evident to us all that we are grappling with an exceptionally challenging circumstance,” Kukah remarked.
“Nigerians are enduring various degrees of hardship; hardships that are inadvertent. There are also specific policy decisions that, ideally, should be revised to promote the welfare of ordinary citizens.
“I firmly believe that the core purpose of governance is to safeguard the well-being of ordinary citizens. These are undoubtedly trying times, and there should be no illusions about that.
“However, this period also presents an opportunity for rebirth; we simply need to commit ourselves to constructing a just society. Such endeavors require considerable time and cannot be accomplished within a single lifetime. In my view, the most crucial aspect is to persevere in reinforcing the positive foundations that have been laid.
“My contention has always been that the government must swiftly enhance the quality of its communication to enable Nigerians to have a clear understanding of the timeline for achieving progress,” he concluded.
