Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos has reiterated the state’s commitment to job creation and tackling unemployment, especially given Lagos’ growing population, currently estimated at 21 million. Speaking at a recent graduation ceremony for artisans and tradesmen, Sanwo-Olu emphasized the state’s ongoing campaign to equip residents with skills that align with global standards, aimed at enhancing employability and reducing Nigeria’s unemployment rate.
Sanwo-Olu highlighted that the government’s strategy includes training programs across all three senatorial districts, benefiting 1,200 individuals—800 artisans and 400 tradesmen. These programs aim to provide essential skills to improve service quality, economic stability, and contribute to a robust Nigerian economy. He noted that over 7,400 people had already received support, including tools and funding, to start or expand their businesses.
To further empower these sectors, Sanwo-Olu announced an increase in the annual subvention to the Lagos State Council of Tradesmen and Artisans (LASCOTA) from N12 million to N15 million, as well as the provision of a new bus for the association.
Hon. Akinyemi Bankole Ajigbotafe, the Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, praised the Up-skilling of Artisans and Tradesmen initiative as a significant socio-economic intervention that prepares artisans to compete effectively in the modern marketplace.
He underscored that the initiative aligns with the T.H.E.M.E.S. Plus development agenda, which focuses on social inclusion, gender equality, and youth empowerment, supporting a vision of a “brighter tomorrow” driven by skills and innovation.
