Argentina goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez expresses his readiness to engage in a potential conflict with his club Aston Villa regarding his participation in this year’s Olympic Games.
Clubs are not mandated to release players for the Olympic football tournament to be held in France from July 24 to August 9, considering the commencement of the new Premier League season on August 17.
Aged 31, Martinez aspires to secure a spot as one of the three players over the age of 23 to be chosen for the Argentina squad.
“I always prioritize Argentina, and I am prepared to enter into a battle with my club if necessary,” Martinez conveyed during an interview on Wednesday.
“For me, the Copa America and then the Olympic Games hold the utmost importance. My ultimate aspiration is to achieve the gold medal. I am eager to partake in the Olympic Games, but the decision does not solely lie with me,” the 2022 World Cup victor elaborated.
Lionel Messi of Inter Miami is also under consideration for the squad, engaging in discussions with Javier Mascherano, who serves as the coach of Argentina’s Olympic team. The 2024 Summer Olympics, officially recognized as the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad and commonly known as Paris 2024, are anticipated to be a global multi-sport event. The event is scheduled to take place from July 26 to August 11.
