Former Real Madrid star Karim Benzema has advised Kylian Mbappe to adapt to a central striker role at the club, citing competition from Vinicius Junior for the left-wing position. Benzema believes that Mbappe, who recently transferred from Paris Saint-Germain, will need to adjust in Madrid as he faces new challenges under coach Carlo Ancelotti.
Ancelotti has favored keeping Brazilian international Vinicius on the left wing, placing Mbappe in the center, a position where he has yet to fully excel.
Benzema, speaking on Spanish television show “El Chiringuito”, pointed out that Mbappe has never felt entirely comfortable playing as a central striker. “With the national team, every time he plays as a number nine, he doesn’t feel comfortable because it’s not his natural position,” Benzema said. He emphasized that Vinicius is currently one of the best left-wingers globally, making it unlikely for Mbappe to reclaim his preferred position on the left.
The transition has placed pressure on Mbappe, who has scored eight goals in 14 appearances for Madrid so far. Despite this, Benzema highlighted the differences between PSG and Madrid’s expectations, warning Mbappe that fans demand immediate results. “People have high expectations of him, and he’s under a lot of pressure. This isn’t Paris Saint-Germain,” Benzema added.
Benzema advised Mbappe to remain resilient and work on his adaptation to the central role. He suggested that Mbappe should temporarily set aside the left flank and focus on developing as a number nine to meet the club’s demands. “He’s not going to push Vinicius out of position. For now, he has to accept being a number nine,” Benzema said, urging patience and perseverance.
Having spent 14 seasons with Real Madrid, Benzema understands the scrutiny players face at the club. He warned Mbappe that failing to score in a few matches could lead to intense criticism. With Madrid’s upcoming Champions League match against AC Milan, the spotlight will be on Mbappe to prove his adaptability and make an impact as a central striker.
