MTN Nigeria Expands Digital Capacity with West Africa’s Largest Data Centre

MTN Nigeria has announced plans to build West Africa’s largest data center, aiming to bolster the country’s digital infrastructure. This state-of-the-art facility, with a capacity of 1,500 racks and Tier 4 certification, will address the escalating demand for data and digital services across Nigeria.
Mohammed Rufai, MTN’s Chief Technical Officer, outlined the project’s significance, citing the rapid growth in data consumption and the need for enhanced processing capabilities. “The market demand for data is surging,” Rufai explained, “prompting us to expand and modernize our data center capacity now to meet current needs and future growth.”

The new data center will serve as a critical asset for MTN’s operations and as a key resource for Nigerian businesses. Rufai highlighted its role in enabling companies to digitize operations more effectively by eliminating the need for maintaining individual server rooms. This centralized facility will also optimize content delivery from major tech firms like Meta and Google, thereby enhancing user experience and network efficiency.

Beyond technological advancement, the project aims to spur economic growth by offering scalable infrastructure for startups and small businesses. Rufai emphasized MTN’s commitment to environmental sustainability, noting plans for energy-efficient cooling systems and a blend of energy sources including gas and renewables to minimize carbon footprint.
