Nationwide Protests: USA, UK And Canada Issues Security Alerts
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on WhatsappShare on EmailShare on Telegram

The government of the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada have issued security alerts to their nationals in Nigeria, cautioning them about potential violence during the scheduled #EndBadGovernance protest on August 1, 2024. In their respective travel advisories, the three nations advised their citizens to avoid areas where clashes between security forces and protesters may occur, citing past incidents as justification.

This week, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, governed by the All Progressives Congress (APC), is under significant pressure as Nigerians prepare to demonstrate against perceived poor governance. The widespread public dissatisfaction indicates a possible showdown with the federal government unless there is a last-minute change in the situation.

A series of emergency meetings involving the presidency, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), the National Security Adviser, heads of security agencies, state governors, ministers, and APC leadership highlights the government’s apprehension.

The organizers of the protests, operating under the #EndBadGovernance movement, have been mobilizing young people and civil society groups to protest against economic challenges and the alleged shortcomings of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The US Mission in Abuja, in its advisory, has urged Americans to avoid participating in the demonstrations, advising them to stay away from large gatherings and protests and to remain informed through local media sources.

The Nigerian government has issued a warning regarding potential nationwide protests taking place between July 29th and August 5th, 2024. These protests may lead to roadblocks, checkpoints, traffic congestion, and physical confrontations, as reported by various media outlets.

Likewise, the UK High Commission has advised that protests may occur between July 29th and August 10th in major cities such as Abuja and Lagos. British nationals are urged to exercise caution, avoid large crowds, and stay informed through media reports. Previous protests have escalated into violence with little warning.

Furthermore, the Canadian government has also alerted its citizens about the upcoming demonstrations. They have advised to expect disruptions in traffic and public transportation and cautioned that protests could escalate unexpectedly into violence.

It is recommended to remain vigilant, follow the instructions of local authorities, and continuously monitor local media for updated information. The advisories issued by authorities warn of potential disruptions to traffic and public transportation as well as the possibility of escalating violence during the planned nationwide protests in Nigeria. These concerns highlight the heightened risks to safety and security posed by the protests.
