Pedro Neto’s stunning strike salvaged a 1-1 draw for Chelsea against Arsenal in a tense London derby on Sunday, leaving Arsenal’s Premier League title ambitions hanging by a thread.
Mikel Arteta’s team had taken the lead through Gabriel Martinelli’s second-half goal, but Chelsea quickly responded with Neto’s equaliser 10 minutes later, condemning Arsenal to a fourth consecutive league match without a win.
The draw kept Chelsea in third place, level on points with Arsenal in fourth but ahead on goal difference. Both teams now sit nine points behind league leaders Liverpool, but while Chelsea will take encouragement from their strong start to the season under new manager Enzo Maresca, Arsenal heads into the international break under growing pressure.
Their form has been inconsistent, with the recent loss to Inter Milan in the Champions League following a defeat at Newcastle, leaving them with just three wins in their last nine league matches.
Arsenal, aiming for their first title since 2004, have struggled to find the fluency that took them so close last season, where they finished second to Manchester City.
Their recent form, with just two wins in their last seven matches across all competitions, has raised serious concerns about their ability to mount a serious title challenge. Arsenal’s only victories came against Shakhtar Donetsk in Europe and second-tier Preston in the League Cup.
Chelsea, meanwhile, have exceeded expectations since Maresca’s arrival, and while they couldn’t secure a first home win over Arsenal in six years, their performance was an indication that they are heading in the right direction.
Cole Palmer, a standout player for Chelsea this season, impressed again with his quick-fire shot that forced Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya into action. Palmer was also instrumental in leading several counter-attacks, while his teammates, such as Malo Gusto and Noni Madueke, came close with blocked shots and a header that just missed the target.
Arsenal did find the breakthrough after an hour, with Martinelli finishing a clever pass from captain Martin Odegaard. The Norwegian playmaker, making his first start since August, created the opening goal with a sublime pass to Martinelli, who beat Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez at his near post.
This goal seemed to signal a potential turning point for Arsenal, with Jurrien Timber almost doubling their lead soon after, only for his drive to miss by inches.
However, Chelsea responded swiftly, and Maresca’s tactical change paid off. Moving Neto to the right wing allowed the Portuguese winger to cut inside and deliver a powerful low strike from 25 yards, which found the bottom corner of the net.
Arsenal’s frustration was evident as their lead evaporated so quickly, leaving them with just a point and continuing their search for answers as they head into the break.
