Moghalu Condemns Extra Tax Burden
Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Kingsley Moghalu on new taxes, criticized fresh demands on citizens. He called the move unfair, stressing the unchecked corruption and waste in governance and misuse of public funds. Moghalu insisted that accountability must come before any new tax measures.
The economist raised fresh concerns about Kingsley Moghalu on new taxes, asking how oil revenues and billions in borrowed funds were spent. He said leaders must explain the disappearance of resources while corruption and waste in governance remain unchecked. Moghalu argued that Nigerians cannot carry heavier tax burdens under such conditions.
In a post on his X handle, Moghalu described Nigeria’s political class as “self-entitled elites.” He accused them of lacking transparency and ignoring accountability. He stressed that until corruption and waste in governance end, tax reforms will only worsen the burden on ordinary Nigerians.
Call for Accountability First
Moghalu emphasized that taxes are vital in the social contract between government and citizens. However, he insisted that government must first prove accountability. “The profligacy and corruption in what passes for governance makes it unfair to expect citizens to pay additional taxes,” he wrote.
